The Highline, Manhattan’s Most Unique Park

This past weekend a few friends and I paid a visit to New York’s newly renovated High Line Park. The High Line was originally a closed railroad line that ran along the Hudson River. Once it was out of use, New Yorkers began climbing the elevated railroad tracks for recreational purposes. This past year, the city gave the park a major face lift. The park now retains the feel of an old railroad track but in a much more updated manner.

The Highline is filled with futuristic looking benches and has a few art galleries you can stop in during your walk. There are viewing spots where you can stop and watch the traffic below and rotating art installations. They’re developing a fountain where you can wade and there are lots of chaise lounges which are often occupied. The city even contracted a landscaping company to use plants that would mimic the ones seen in the old park, which helps the park still feel like an abandoned railroad track. The park is a great place to go for daytime or evening walks or a quick bite to eat from one of the food carts.

The High Line can be entered in a few different spots along the West Side of Manhattan in Chelsea. For more information, visit thehighline.org.
